Camera Focus Calibration Stage

A precision-mechanics concept for moving a test target repeatably during camera focus and alignment experiments.

Project brief

This proposed stage would support repeatable focus experiments by positioning a flat optical target along a defined axis. The work would combine a guided mechanical stage, target holder, distance reference, and a software routine for comparing image sharpness under fixed settings. CAD would emphasize target squareness, backlash awareness, adjustment access, and a clear camera-to-target datum. The software would preserve camera settings and image identifiers so that results from different positions remain comparable. Proposed deliverables include the stage assembly, an acquisition checklist, and an image-analysis notebook. The concept would explore relative focus behavior and setup repeatability without claiming lens calibration accuracy, precision metrology performance, or an established production alignment process.

Engineering approach

  1. Define camera and target reference datums.
  2. Design guided travel and an adjustable target holder.
  3. Capture image settings with stage position.
  4. Compare sharpness measures on controlled image sets.

Validation plan

  • Repeat a position sequence in both directions to expose backlash.
  • Confirm target alignment before comparing focus.
  • Test image metrics against deliberately defocused reference images.
