Modular CNC Inspection Fixture

A fixture concept with replaceable locating elements and clear datum references for inspecting small machined parts.

Project brief

This proposed fixture would locate a family of small machined parts for repeatable dimensional inspection. The concept would separate datum location from clamping so the force path and constraint strategy remain easy to review. A modular base with replaceable pins, support pads, and clamp brackets would allow controlled changes between part variants. The CAD work would include tolerance considerations, tool access, identification marks, and manufacturing drawings for the fixture elements. A measurement study would be planned around repeated loading and unloading of a reference part. The intended outcome is a reviewable fixture architecture and inspection method, not a claim of established gauge repeatability or accuracy. All achievable tolerances would depend on fabrication and the selected measurement equipment.

Engineering approach

  1. Choose functional datums and a constraint strategy.
  2. Separate locating contacts from clamp reactions.
  3. Parameterize replaceable fixture elements.
  4. Plan repeated reference-part measurements.

Validation plan

  • Repeat loading and measure the same reference surfaces.
  • Check that clamp force does not visibly distort the part.
  • Compare fixture-element dimensions with the drawing baseline.
